Inner And Outer Landscapes
My work deals with inner and outer “landscapes”. Inner landscapes depict human attitudes and states of mind; outer landscapes depict our natural world through various interpretations. While separate domains, both worlds influence each other i.e., how we perceive something and how we interpret what we perceive.
Inner Landscapes
My inner landscapes project human psychological attitudes and are presented as open-ended, enigmatic scenarios to draw the viewer into their own interpretation. In so doing, it may make viewers aware of their own subjective attitude and state of mind - how we respond, think, and feel.
These inner landscapes are grouped in thematic series:
- Interactions in groups of people
- Individual portraits
- Double portraits (two aspects of the same person)
- Dreamscapes
- Traumas (fear, anxiety, expectation, etc.)
Outer Landscapes
These works are derived from my response to natural and human modified landscapes. They explore light, mood, form, and place.
Working Method
My paintings are done in acrylic paint on primed canvas. Drawings are done on heavy archival paper or illustration board in charcoal, pencil, pastel or watercolor. My prints are reproduced through stone lithography in editions of no more than 20.
Many of my paintings and drawings are derived from photographic sources – my own photographs and others. Frequently, groups of figures are combined from different sources much like montage or collage, to achieve new relationships and psychological tensions. The scale of the figures most often is life-size or larger.
My Overall Intention
Both Inner and Outer landscapes are rendered in a figurative style allowing for an immediate access with particular focus on human, rather than art issues.
